COURSE SUMMARY
This is an honors class
This course covers introductory concepts in statistics and probability. Students cover topics such as data collection, data analysis, statistical tools and graphical displays, and an introduction to probability theory. In this course, there is a strong emphasis on real world applications. Students will examine how data analysis and the likelihood of events can be applied to our lives every day. This course will also strengthen critical thinking skills and ability to be a successful problem solver. This course serves as an introduction to the AP Statistics course.
Students interpret statistics around social media as they compare usage of Facebook and Twitter, evaluate the economic impacts of Hurricanes Sandy and Katrina based on published data and discuss the effects of texting on communication skills among teenagers. They work collaboratively to analyze the ages of video game consumers from a marketing perspective and critically evaluate the correlation of launch time and mass of the Atlantis and the Discovery space shuttles to develop and interpret a model that predicts shuttle mass during launch.
*This course contains a final exam that will require the student to identify in advance an appropriate location as well as an adult proctor for the exam. Forms and instructions for students to identify a location and proctor are included as a lesson within the course.

PREREQUISITES
Students must have the ability to use basic algebraic formulas. Students need to have access to a graphing calculator (TI-83 or TI-84) to complete course activities.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
